King Charles and Queen Camilla's "Major Royal Visit" to America Is Sooner Than You Think

With America celebrating a few significant milestones, the monarchs are headed stateside.

It has been a while since a reigning British monarch has paid the United States a visit, but according to a royal source, royal fans and observers may not have to wait very long for King Charles and Queen Camilla to grace us with their presence.

Royal biographer Robert Hardman, author of Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story., predicts that the King and Queen will make their way to the United States by 2026 at least, though there is a small chance that they may come to the country sooner.

"I'm quite sure we'll see a major royal visit to the States in the next year or two, not least because it's the big 250th [anniversary] of the U.S. independence coming up," Hardman said while speaking with Marie Claire.

The recent change in presidents and Donald Trump's inauguration is also a probable cause of visit for the British royals, Hardman added. "Normally, when you get a change of reign, and a change of president, there's a lot of two-way traffic," he explained. A visit to the states from Charles has been a long time in the making—according to the royal biographer, the reigning monarch "has not paid a state visit to the U.S. since he's become King" and also "hasn't received a U.S. president to the U.K. since he's become King."

Charles hasn't been to America since 2018, with an official tour of the country happening in 2022 when the Prince William attended the Earthshot Prize ceremony in Boston alongside Kate Middleton. While not considered an official royal visit, Prince Edward went to Washington, D.C to attend the funeral of former president Jimmy Carter's funeral in early January.

There is a chance that Trump may visit England first, but according to Hardman, "it's a really interesting question for scholars of protocol and etiquette," and "there's a general understanding that world leaders of the major countries will get an incoming state visit during a term of office." The biographer noted "it's highly likely we'll see Donald Trump over here at some point."
